Pinecone's BYOC solution allows enterprises to maintain data control and security while harnessing AI capabilities in their own cloud environments.

Pinecone has officially launched its Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC) service, making the platform available for deployment on major cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure. This rollout places Pinecone’s trusted AI knowledge platform directly into the environments where enterprise data resides, emphasizing the importance of operational context and proprietary knowledge in enhancing AI applications.

Organizations have invested considerable effort in managing the environments in which sensitive information is stored and accessed. Traditionally, enabling AI capabilities involved overseeing a variety of systems, such as vector databases, inference layers, and document parsing functionalities. Teams often struggled with maintaining consistent performance and retrieving quality across various AI workloads.
Customer-Controlled AI with BYOC
With the introduction of BYOC, customer data is securely housed within the organization's cloud account while Pinecone takes charge of operational management. This allows businesses to deploy sensitive AI workloads with ease, as they are no longer burdened with the complexities of managing underlying infrastructure. The interfaces and APIs remain consistent with Pinecone’s managed service, offering flexibility in deployment models tailored to the specific security and operational needs of each application.

Pinecone’s architecture is designed to segregate the systems that manage its services from those that handle customer data. It operates with two distinct planes:
- Control Plane: Responsible for resource management, authentication, and monitoring service health, without interacting with customer data.
- Data Plane: This facet is solely dedicated to storing, processing, and servicing customer data, allowing AI applications to execute read and write operations seamlessly. Only anonymized operational metrics are shared with Pinecone for monitoring purposes.
The BYOC model runs entirely within the selected cloud account of the customer, ensuring that documents, vectors, and metadata remain within a controlled environment.

A Zero-Access Framework
From a security standpoint, Pinecone's BYOC implementation introduces a zero-access framework. This means there’s no requirement for SSH, VPN, or cross-account roles for ongoing management. Instead, management operations are executed through outbound calls from the Pinecone control plane, ensuring that there’s no permanent access path into the customer’s network. This model enhances security by adhering to strict access controls while also supporting existing enterprise solutions such as RBAC, SCIM + SAML, and private networking utilities available through the Pinecone Enterprise plan.
Maintaining a Streamlined Experience
Despite this elaborate security architecture, Pinecone ensures that customers still benefit from its full range of managed services. Customers will have continuous access to support and engineering resources to help with troubleshooting and incident response. They can continue using Pinecone's APIs, SDKs, and workflows uniformly across both BYOC and standard deployments, thus eliminating the need to develop disparate solutions for different workloads.
Case Study: Toyota Motor North America
Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) serves as a prime example of BYOC's effectiveness. By leveraging Pinecone’s platform, TMNA has managed to integrate decades of proprietary manufacturing knowledge, ensuring that their sensitive data remains secure while powering AI-driven applications.
“Our technical documentation and research data are significant assets that require strict governance,” said Ravi Chandu Ummadisetti, Head of Agentic AI & Product Research at TMNA. “Using R&D GPT along with Pinecone allows us to leverage this knowledge swiftly and intuitively while keeping our data secure.”
“The complexity of our manufacturing expertise is immense, spanning structured engineering data and unstructured documents,” commented Kordel France, Head of AI Engineering at TMNA. “Pinecone BYOC fits seamlessly in our infrastructure, helping us navigate that complexity while upholding the necessary controls.”
Pushing Boundaries with Trusted AI
Pinecone's vision extends beyond the current BYOC offering. The company is actively developing a fully self-managed option designed for use in highly secured and air-gapped networks. This extension will enable both the control and data planes to reside entirely within the customer’s distinct environment, paving the way for more tailored AI deployment solutions.
Next Steps with Pinecone
Organizations interested in adopting the BYOC model are encouraged to engage with their Pinecone account team to explore customized deployment plans that meet their specific needs. For in-depth insights, users can also access the Pinecone BYOC product page and detailed BYOC documentation, which thoroughly describe the operating model and architectural setup.
