European Cities Enhance Urban Management Through NVIDIA-Powered AI Solutions

Urban management demands precise decision-making that directly influences the daily lives of residents. From scheduling road repairs to optimizing energy usage, efficient governance is essential.

Cities and local software partners across the EMEA region are increasingly adopting NVIDIA's accelerated computing technologies to develop both physical AI agents and digital twins. These advancements enable municipalities to anticipate maintenance needs, improve urban planning processes, and make public services more responsive and efficient.

Key software partners involved in these initiatives include ABA Technology, Akila, Galene AI, Honeywell Technologies, K2K, Linker Vision, Milestone, Onetera, ThinkDeep, and Younite AI. They are utilizing NVIDIA's technologies to create tailored solutions that enhance urban operations and public services.

NVIDIA's Cosmos open models and the NVIDIA Metropolis Blueprint for video search and summarization (VSS) provide the necessary tools for these AI agents to interpret real-time video data. Applications include identifying traffic congestion, assessing equipment conditions, and spotting safety hazards. Additionally, the NVIDIA Nemotron open models enable developers to create agents that can reason over generated information and respond in natural language, aiding in the deployment of sophisticated digital twin technologies utilizing NVIDIA Omniverse libraries.

This trend spans several European countries, including Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and the U.K.

Case Studies of AI Implementation

In the U.K., Liverpool City Region and K2K are focusing on constructing AI 'factories' powered by NVIDIA technologies, which aim to bolster urban planning initiatives and public services by refining applications related to mobility and safety. Furthermore, the Island of Jersey is collaborating with K2K to spearhead better decision-making in mobility alongside urban planning, while also pushing for clean energy solutions.

Innovation City Belfast is piloting a project with K2K aimed at enhancing smart mobility, transport systems, and citizen safety, including effective event management and response strategies.

In France, the Department of Côte-d’Or, with the support of companies like Akila and ThinkDeep, has developed operational agents. These agents utilize historical data, infrastructure, and sensor inputs in a sovereign digital twin framework powered by NVIDIA’s technologies. These agents span over 500 public buildings, aiming to enhance energy efficiency, compliance, safety, and climate resilience. Document retrieval times have decreased from weeks to minutes, with operational costs reduced by an anticipated 10%, and targeting a future goal of 30% savings.

In Sète, ThinkDeep is working alongside Port Sud de France, using its platforms to analyze cargo and safety data while ensuring the secure handling of hazardous materials.

Italy's Milan region, through collaboration with Galene.AI, Dell Technologies, and TD Synnex, is testing a locally operated AI factory that will initially serve Cinisello Balsamo, with plans to expand to four additional municipalities. This initiative includes real-time translation capabilities and citizen chatbots, aiming to streamline administrative workflows and provide quick access to municipal data.

At the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, Milestone and Dell Technologies are piloting agentic vision technologies utilizing NVIDIA Cosmos and VSS blueprint. Their goal is to develop systems capable of responding to oil spill incidents through synthetic data training methodologies to compensate for potential real-world data shortages.

In the Nordics, Younite AI is crafting a digital twin experience using NVIDIA Omniverse libraries for the city of Gothenburg, part of the EU's Citiverse initiative. This project intends to generate simulations that enhance accessibility by offering previews of event conditions such as seating arrangements and crowd sizes before arrival.

Ecosystem for AI Deployment

The broader ambition across these European cities involves customizing agentic applications to specific local requirements and expanding their use among neighboring municipalities. Countries such as Poland are also looking into similar advancements, with cities like Wroclaw at the forefront.

Global infrastructure partners like Cisco, Dell Technologies, HPE, Lenovo, and Supermicro are collaborating to create the necessary AI infrastructure. These partnerships combine NVIDIA's accelerated computing, networking, and storage capabilities designed to support localized AI service factories, enabling cities to maintain control over their data and models.

Additional companies like Nebius and Net Zero Compute play a crucial role by focusing on building AI factories that enhance deployment speeds and lower operating costs. Integration experts such as EY and Accenture are essential in connecting AI applications with municipal systems, helping cities establish repeatable deployment strategies that evolve as local demands change.

With the Smart City Expo World Congress looming, taking place from November 3-5 in Barcelona, the push for physical AI, agentic AI, and local AI factories continues to gain momentum, facilitating smarter urban settings across the globe.
